There is a Banshee outside...

Our normal beautiful spring weather was interrupted today by a major storm moving in off the Atlantic. There was the normal mixture of rain and sun, but it is the gale force winds that really keep you on your toes. As I write this I am sitting here watching our van rock back and forth as the gusts of winds hit its right side. This kind of weather isn't anything unusual, but it got me thinking. I think that it was the sounds that really got me thinking. Our new house has some very different sounds than our old flat. I'm not sure what is causing it, but every once and a while I hear a whistle. It isn't loud, and it isn't bothersome... just strange. The whistle will slowly change pitch and then will suddenly change in a different direction.... If I didn't know better I would think that it is a child trying to practice a 'wolf whistle'. Thankfully that is the only strange sound that we occasionally hear... we have some friends here that were living in a house that had the most eerie sound. The winds would occasionally hit the windows at just the right angle and would make a sound that really resembled a baby crying........ now just imagine that... waking up in the middle of the night only to discover that it wasn't your baby crying.... just the wind... spooky! There is no way that I could ever get used to that one.

It is little wonder that ancient Irish superstition explained these strange sounds by saying that it was the Banshee (Bean Sí) or 'female spirit'. It was believed that the fairy woman would wail outside your window as a warning of impending death. There are many traditional stories about this white-clothed, red-eyed, and very haggard looking woman where she actually caused the person to act in a way that brought about their death. Legend has it that she, herself, is not to be feared. She simply is trying to protect and warn.

Ok.... I don't believe in Banshees....... but on a day like today, I'm almost a believer!

Public Service...

Just a quick FYI....

Driving in the car today I heard a new public service announcement reminding people about the danger older people face on farms. We were encouraged to always check for older relatives before backing up tractors and to remember that bulls pose a serious health risk and are extremely dangerous to older people who may not have quick reactions......

New Addition

Yep! We have a new addition to our household.... Actually two new additions. We are now the proud owners of two goldfish. They survived their first week as part of our family (always a big step) and so we thought that it was time to introduce them. We were inspired by the weather forecast one night and named the first one (on the right) Mister Drizzle (the forecast called for mist or drizzle). Deedra named the second one (on the left) Emer. They have added a little bit of life to our living room, and all of our friend's kids love them.... But I have decided that my calling is not to be a fish photographer. It took me thirty shots just to get one clear picture of the two guys together and Mr. Drizzle isn't even facing the camera!!! Aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!

Links...

Ok... I don't normally give out a ton of links to other sites... But I did find one site that I think has some really funny stuff on it. The site is designed to administer fun little tests.... So just follow the links below to find out what kind of European you really are (Are you really Frenchy at heart...? Do you have a stiff upper lip like Prince Charles...? Or are you a fun loving Irish? ).
Also... Since we have been living in Ireland I have really been interested in speech patterns and words that don't really translate from Southern English to Hiberno English... So the second quiz was interesting also. So..... As they say here.... Give it a go... And don't forget to drop me an email with your results!

Inner European?

Whew! My results (See below).... I have to admit that I am a little relieved! Give it a go and email us your results!!!

Knocked Out

Well.... It happened last night.... I attended my first ever badminton tournament. You might remember that I joined a local badminton club last fall just to meet people and to have a good laugh... Well, I thought the whole tournament thing was a good bit of craic (fun), but I was a little surprised at how serious most people were taking it. I gave it my all, but alas I - along with my partner Mary - were knocked out of the competition on the very first round. That is ok... I had a great time with new friends... A good couple of games... A commemorative key chain for participating... And I even get to keep my official team jersey. Like I said it was a lot of fun, and I am really glad to have the chance to do something a little bit different (that I normally would not do) each week... And hey... There is always next year.

My Mother's Paradise...

This little stretch of beach truly is a shell lover's paradise... I instantly thought of my mother... And how she would try and get as many of them home as she possibly could. Unfortunately... this spot is so far from our house that we will probably only be able to go there years from now...

Hiberno English...

Ok... Just learned this one today. "Jumping Jacks" are not called "Jumping Jacks" here.... They are called "Star Jumps"! How cool is that? It is just one of those little bits of Hiberno (Irish) English that make us smile.

Irish Monsters (Take 2)

I don't know if you remember a post that I put up on the site back in October about an ongoing investigation into a mysterious (loch ness like) monster that has been reported in Ireland. I have to admit that personally I'm not a total believer in these type things... but I find it especially interesting to live in a place that has such a neat ongoing mystery. This is where the plot thickens... I was recently contacted by someone who has a website completely dedicated to the Irish monster sightings. This site (http://www.mysteryanimalsofireland.com/) give more information about the Irish monster, and even details other sightings of monsters in Ireland. I don't know if this kind of stuff interests you but if it does, this is a site that you might want to check out.
