Samhain

I have been asked several times if Ireland celebrates Halloween... Yes. Today is Samhain or November Eve - now called "Hallowe'en". Samhain was the ancient Irish festival of winter and the dead. November 1st is the first day of winter here - when the weather becomes wild and there are just a few hours of daylight. Traditionally the Samhain was gloomy and sinister when the cattle were driven down from their summer pastures, when animals were slaughtered, and there was an onset of cold and darkness. It is believed that this crossing over from the harvest months to the short dark days of winter was a time when the boundaries between the natural and supernatural worlds were broken down. Although the day was a dark day it was not necessarily a scary day, in many ways it was a lighter, merrier sort of day. In many parts of the country, households would go to bed early on Samhain and leave their kitchen lighted and heated for the arrival of the dead ancestors, who could then spend a comfortable evening there.

Halloween today is very different. It, much like other holidays, has taken on an American flavor. It has just come about over the past decade (or so) that children dress up and go door to door trick or treating... And that stores have even started decorating. The interesting thing is that it is also a day of celebration. Fireworks are sold, roadside bonfires are built, and the pubs are full.

Rocks...

We took this picture a few weeks ago in one of my favorite places to visit. I don't think that I have seen a place yet that has more rocks...

On the Road Again...

Yep... now you have that song stuck in your head...... sorry that there have not been many posts this week. We have had to leave our little home and hit the road. We will be away for a couple of days... but we will start posting again at the end of the week when we get back from our meetings.

What are the odds...

I was just watching the news here and they were talking about the large number of people in Britain and Ireland that are interested in the US election. The story focused in on the fact that many people were rushing to the "bookmakers" to make a bet on the outcome. What are the odds? 4 to 7 for Bush to win and 5 to 4 for Kerry to win.

Who is ready for a little game?

Let’s play a little game. I’ve picked a couple of very common signs that we see all around Ireland… let’s see how well you would do living in Ireland. Try and click the correct meaning.

    Float like a..... What?

I never have pictured myself as a boxer…. To be honest with you I never really pictured myself playing competitive badminton or working at night in a local pottery shop… Don’t worry mom, I’m not boxing… but I have joined a badminton club and I am taking pottery classes at a local shop. One of the neat things that we have learned about our community is that countless clubs (from chess to boxing) spring up during the colder seasons. I guess that they are there to help everyone get through the cold dark months of winter, and to give everyone a chance to get out and have some fun. I have to say that the pottery class is my favorite. It is a lot of fun going in to that little dusty shop where the music is really loud and I somehow always end up covered in clay. I don’t know why… its not like I try and get it in my hair or on my shoes… and somehow I’m the only one who ever really gets messy. The class is a good way to meet people and to make some useful things… but really… how many little bowls do we really need? My big goal is to make a mug. One that really holds liquid, doesn’t wobble, and looks halfway decent…. We will just have to see…

    Just A Local Monster....

    Have you seen this creature?

No... We are not talking about the Loch Ness in Scotland... This monster lives in a lough in Ireland. I've just learned that there is a local legend about a large monster that lives in a bog lake near us. The legend has it that a large monster called the 'horse eel' lives in a series of glacial valley lakes that are very secluded and are locked by extensive bogs on all sides. One reason that it has been so hard to capture or locate the monster is because it is believed to be able to travel over land from lake to lake. The 'horse eel' is said to have a front half which resembles a horse and a back half which tapers off like an eel. The monster's existence is still debatable, but credible sightings of the monster go as far back as the 1880's. The Loch Ness Investigation Bureau investigated in 1968 and its findings were inconclusive. We will hopefully have some firm 'scientific' proof about the monster's existence soon.... A Japanese television crew is coming to the area to do a documentary for a Japanese version of the Discovery Channel. Who knows... I might even drive up there and have a look around.......

    Erk!

This past week has been a blast. My old college roommate - Eric has been here visiting with us. The weather has been rainy... and Dee and I have been very busy with work, but we have managed to squeeze in some time for Nintendo and some time to travel around our area. We were really sad to say goodbye to Eric today... but we were so glad to have time with him here in Ireland.

Having fun with "Con son of the sea" who was placed here "for no apparent reason".

    All Things Irish....

    A Few Irish Proverbs....
A boy's best friend is his mother and there's no spancel stronger than her apron string.

A live dog is better than a dead lion.

A nod is as good as a wink to a blind horse.

If you lie down with dogs you'll rise with fleas.

In winter the milk goes to the cow's horns.

    Irish Blessings....
May the Lord keep you in His hand
And never close His fist too tight.

May the saddest day of your future be no worse
Than the happiest day of your past.

May the roof above us never fall in.
And may the friends gathered below it never fall out.

    Maybe, just maybe...

My Uncle Harry says that we might be descendants of W.B. Yeats. How cool would that be? [My maiden name is Yates.] As you may know, Yeats is a well known poet, and he is known for helping to found the first Irish theatre society. While Dena was visiting, we went to see Thoor Ballylee. Yeats bought this Norman tower and used it as a summer home. Dena and I took the tour of the tower and were very interested in this room. The room looked clean until we uncovered the dust hidden under the rug. And we thought, 'hey, maybe we are related'...
